Spring Equinox - Rituals for Balance + Beauty

The vernal equinox is nearly here! A day of balance and beauty that heralds in true spring in the northern hemisphere. Cultures worldwide celebrate the spring equinox in a multitude of ways and many of our ‘standard’ spring and Easter traditions date back to early practices across the globe.
The Equinox is the perfect time to cleanse, purify, & of course play.
Herbs for a Spring Detox
Dandelions are the traditional plant for a spring clean of your body. Rich in minerals and vitamins, these early spring greens help to replenish your system after a winter season with less fresh greens that our body likes. Dandelion also supports your liver - aiding in purifying your blood and keeping you in tip top shape. As a bonus, when we support our liver (even for non-drinkers) we help our bodies reduce our allergy responses. Pick some fresh baby greens for your (pesticide free) yard and add them to your salads, beans & greens or on top of your avocado toast.
Essential Oils for Purification, Blessings & Support
Geranium - supports feminine yin energy and increases Qi (vitality). This gentle oil is an anti-inflammatory that calms your soul. Particularly helpful for chronic stress, add this to your daily routine!
Cypress - renewal, transformation & transition. Cypress offers a woodsy aroma that also builds Qi and enlivens blood flow for moving past winter stagnation. Strong and stable, this oil supports you through seasons of change
Lemongrass - psychic cleansing, clarity and focus. Lemongrass brings a little dry heat energy to balance the moisture of spring. If you need to cleanse your mind and step out of the mud, this is your oil.
Eucalyptus - stimulating, antimicrobial oil that fights germs and clears dampness. Perfect for your house during the spring germ season! Unsurprisingly, this aromatic oil supports Lung energy - enhancing and fortifying your lungs.
Palo Santo - purification & blessings. Every equinox I cleanse my house, my soul, and my body. Palo Santo offers a warm woodsy support that feels grounding during the spring. Anoint the top of your head and the bottoms of your feet to reconnect to both mother earth and the divine.
Make a blend:
2 Drops Geranium
2 Drops Cypress
4 Drops Clary Sage
8 Drops Lavender
1 Drop Vetiver
This blend is a starting point - be bold and create your own!
Add to 2 oz of water to make a room spray.
Add to a carrier oil, like apricot oil, to make a personal perfume.
Welcome Spring with Play
What better way to honor the season of baby lambs and wee chicks, than to frolic like a little kid again? Frivolity increases endorphins. Being silly makes you smile. All of this increases oxytocin in your blood - which is needed after long gray months. Don’t worry if you close your eyes, no one can see you…
Skip barefoot in the grass.
Jump in a rain puddle.
Sit outside with a cuppa during a rain shower.
Have an adult easter egg hunt.
Count the daffodils in your neighborhood on your daily walk. Keep a list in your journal.
Have a flower pressing tea party with friends.
Decorate eggs in new ways - try Shibori dying, silk dying, or decoupage. I’ve even seen knit eggs.
Spring Equinox Ritual
To walk intentionally into spring, I love to create a little spring altar in my house. This can be as witchy woo or sweet & simple as you like.
Put some flowers together, maybe forsythia or daffodils.
I like to include some crystals:
-
Carnelian or Tigers Eye for grounding
-
Rose Quartz for my heart & self love
-
Rainbow Moonstone for feminine strength & fresh starts - cuz spring feels female to me
-
Aventurine for new opportunities
-
Labradorite for transformations
Write your Intention:
Write what you are bringing to fruition this season. Be big, be bold, or just commit to daily dish washing. Whatever you need - this is for you. Place this on your altar. It can live here or your can plant it in your garden to grow & bloom.
Light a candle:
White for cleansing & clearing.
Green for growth & opportunity.
Yellow for joy & light.
You can pull a tarot or oracle while focusing on what you intend to grow this season.
You can light some mugwort & clear your personal energy/aura.
You can journal while you sit.
You can just sip your tea & enjoy the flowers.
This is all about you - Happy Spring, Sweet Friends.
In peace + light,
Jessica
